How to utilise international exchange programs for your resume building?

An international exchange program can help in broadening your horizons and giving you useful skills. The whole experience cannot be summed up in a few bullet points. And if you don’t do it right on your resume, it might not have any effect on the employer. You have to incorporate the experience into conversations and professional materials. The employer needs to know how your international exchange program experience benefits them. Here, we will show you how you can utilize the international exchange program for resume building.

Here are the steps you can take for building your resume:

1. Thinking about the experience

You have to take a stroll down memory lane and figure out exactly what you did. You might have taken on some practical skills like problem-solving, time management, and goal setting along the way. Also, you can list the qualities and abilities you used for daily interactions.

2. Using dynamic language

Now that you have looked into the qualities and experience you want to emphasize, you can start to express them in a dynamic language. A resume should demonstrate your skills and not just tell them. For example, studying a foreign language is different from improving your language by communicating with native speakers. Use verbs that help you in crafting a compelling resume. This includes words like connected, managed, organized, improved, navigated, etc.

3. Putting it on paper

Deciding where your abroad experience should be focused will impact your resume. The placement will be depending on what information you are providing and what is the weight of the international exchange program in the application. You have to ensure that important information is not getting buried at the end of the resume. Here are the three options that you can use:

International exchange programs are a part of your academic programs. So, this must be included in the Education section below the school you are graduating from or graduated from. This also includes the city and the country where you studied. All the classes you took during your time abroad that are relevant to the internship or job you are applying for should be included in this section. You can add this in a separate line called “Relevant Coursework” under the Education section.
Most students who go for an international exchange program get some working experience. Any and all work experience that you have must be included in the Experience section in chronological order. This experience can be service-learning, a professional assignment, volunteering, or a summer internship.
When you are studying abroad, you take on many skills. You can add all technical and intangible skills under every position that you have had in the Experience section.
