Bachelorof Law (LLB) is an undergraduate professional degree catering to a legal
profession. But, there are a plethora of opportunities for law graduates and
they are not restricted to just practicing as an advocate in court or corporate
firms. Pursuing an LLB course opens up many career avenues for the students
since the course prepares them well to take on the challenges of the
professional world.
Starting
from the admission to the course, which is either based on scores of national
level exams like CLAT, LAWCET, etc. or entrance exams conducted by independent
universities and institutes, students are required to be adequately
knowledgeable. After successful completion of a degree in law, different career
routes that can be undertaken by the students, other than practicing law are as
follows:
Government
Services
Students
can choose to join Government Services after completion of their LLB degree. If
they prepare well, they would be eligible for Indian Administrative Services
and similar officer grade posts in the government. This requires the aspirants
to qualify the exam held by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) or SPSC
(State Public Service Commission). Students with an LLB degree would also be eligible
to join the Air Force, Indian Army, and the Navy.
Teaching
Students
with a remarkable academic aptitude and ability to explain different topics to
a group of people are good fits to become a lecturer/ professor. On completion
of their LLB degree, students can pursue higher education and eventually opt
for teaching as a career. To teach under-graduates and graduates, you would
require an additional Master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree in the subject area
along with NET qualification in India. To teach at the school level, you would
have to acquire a B.Ed. degree, after LLB.
Working
in NGOs
Another
area of work for law graduates is social service. If you are a socially aware
person and you’d like to work for causes that affect others, working in NGOs could
also be a viable option for you. With all the legal knowledge, you could
ideally work as a Human Rights Activist or towards a cause you feel for.
A
reporter for Newspaper and Television Channels
As a
law graduate, you would have ample knowledge about the country’s constitution
and laws as well as language proficiency. You can use these to become a
successful reporter for a newspaper or a news channel.
Politics
If
you’re interested in the governance of the country, you can take up politics
after your LLB degree. With in-depth knowledge on three aspects: Legislature,
Executive and Judiciary, you would be at a strong place to contribute
vigorously in the governance of the country by becoming a politician or a
political analyst/ advisor.
Private
Companies
After
acquiring an LLB degree, you can work at different profiles in a private
company. Private companies offer jobs of various profiles like sales,
marketing, writing, etc. to law graduates. As per your skills, you’ll be
selected for a suitable profile.
A
degree in law opens up several work opportunities for you, apart from
practicing law. As per your interest, you can pursue a particular career route.
